About This Album
Introduction to Indian Music, Volume 2 turns to the lighter side of the North Indian classical tradition: seventeen dhuns, thumris and folk melodies from the Aimrec catalogue.
Where Volume 1 explores the great ragas, Volume 2 gathers the songful forms that often close a concert: thumris in Khammaj, Mishra Piloo, Desh and Bairagi Bhairav; dhuns in Kirwani, Pahadi and Bhairavi; a Rajasthani folk melody in Maand; a Bhatiyali dhun from Bengal; and a Kashmiri dhun on santoor by Pandit Bhajan Sopori.
The roster is a who’s who of Indian music: Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, Ronu Majumdar, Rakesh Chaurasia and many more, on sitar, santoor, bansuri, sarangi, violin, slide guitar and voice. An easy, melodic introduction to Indian music. Released by Aimrec in 2019 (AIMCDIM412).
