About This Album
The Exotic Santoor presents Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, one of the great santoor players of our time, with Ustad Sabir Khan on tabla, in Raga Charukeshi and two folk melodies.
Charukeshi, a raga borrowed from South Indian Carnatic music, has a tender, wistful character that suits the shimmering tone of the santoor, the hammered dulcimer from Kashmir. It is presented in full: an alap, jor and jhala, followed by gats in vilambit (slow) and drut (fast) teental, where the tabla joins. Two folk melodies follow, one in Bhatiyali, from the boatmen’s songs of Bengal, and one in Pahadi, from the hill country.
Tarun Bhattacharya has taken the santoor to concert halls around the world, from the Royal Albert Hall to the Kremlin, and is known for both his classical depth and his collaborations across musical boundaries. Released by Aimrec in 2010 (AIMCDIM200).
