About This Album
The Majestic Sitar presents Shakir Khan of the Etawah gharana, with Enayet Hossain on tabla, in a complete performance of Raga Bageshree.
Bageshree is a late-night raga of longing and devotion. Shakir Khan opens with an unaccompanied alap, then explores the raga across three gats, in vilambit (slow) teental, drut ektal and drut teental, showing how the same raga changes character across different talas and tempos. The album ends with Raga Desh in deepchandi, a melody associated with the monsoon.
Shakir Khan is the son and disciple of sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan and the eighth generation of a family devoted to the sitar. The Majestic Sitar was the first of three albums with Aimrec, followed by The Mystical Sitar and The Lyrical Sitar. Released by Aimrec in 2012 (AIMCDIM360).
