About This Album

Released February 24, 2013

The Magical Voice presents Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, one of the great Hindustani classical vocalists, with Samar Saha on tabla, opening with the morning Raga Ahir Bhairav.

Ahir Bhairav is sung at dawn and has a devotional, gently radiant quality. Pandit Chakraborty presents it as a khayal: a bandish in vilambit (slow) ektal, then a faster bandish in teental. Two lighter ragas follow, Mishra Piloo and Mishra Pahadi, showing the warmth and range of his voice.

Ajoy Chakraborty (also spelled Chakrabarty) is a master of the Patiala-Kasur gharana, shaped by the style of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and is admired for his command of many other styles too. Samar Saha belongs to the Benaras gharana of tabla. An essential album for anyone discovering Indian classical singing. Released by Aimrec in 2013 (AIMCDIM380).
