Raga Yaman

Raga Yaman is one of the most important and best-loved ragas of Hindustani classical music, and often the first raga a student learns. It belongs to the Kalyan thaat and is performed in the evening, in the first hours after sunset.

Yaman uses all seven notes. Every note is natural (shuddha) except Ma, which is sharp (tivra Ma); that raised fourth gives the raga its luminous, serene and devotional character. A common outline is N R G M(tivra) D N S ascending and S N D P M(tivra) G R S descending, with Ga and Ni as its most important notes.

Because it is so expressive and so complete, Yaman is a favourite for full-length concert performances. On Aimrec you can hear it on sitar, bansuri and in the label’s introductory collection.
