Raga Bhairavi is a morning raga, and by long tradition it is also the raga that closes a concert, whatever the hour. It gives its name to the Bhairavi thaat and has a devotional, tender and deeply emotional character.
In its classical form Bhairavi uses flat (komal) Re, Ga, Dha and Ni, with natural Sa, Ma and Pa: S r g m P d n S. In lighter forms, such as thumri, dadra, bhajan and dhun, musicians freely bring in other notes, which is why Bhairavi is heard so often in the final, songful piece of a recital.
Aimrec’s recordings show both sides of the raga: as a sitar and slide-guitar raga, as a dadra and a Kabir bhajan, and as the closing piece of concerts and collections.
