Raga Bihag is a night raga, traditionally performed in the second quarter of the night. It belongs to the Bilawal thaat and is known for its romance, poise and graceful movement.
Bihag avoids Re and Dha in ascent (S G M P N S) and uses them lightly in descent. Its signature is the subtle use of sharp Ma (tivra Ma) alongside natural Ma in descending phrases, a touch that gives the raga its distinctive glow.
On Aimrec, Bihag appears in one of the label’s most ambitious live recordings, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan’s concert performance of more than 70 minutes, as well as in a sitar and piano jugalbandi and on Hidayat Khan’s Sitar Diaries.
