Raga Jhinjhoti

Raga Jhinjhoti (also spelled Jhinjoti) is a lyrical night raga of the Khamaj thaat. It has a light, romantic and slightly playful character, which has made it popular in instrumental music and in light-classical songs.

Jhinjhoti moves around the lower and middle registers, with phrases that often begin below Sa and rise gracefully. It uses natural notes with flat Ni (komal ni) in descent, sharing some of the sweetness of Khamaj.

Aimrec has recorded Jhinjhoti in several complete performances: Ustad Shujaat Khan’s Excellence on the Sitar (on CD and vinyl), Hidayat Khan’s Six Strings, and a sitar and violin jugalbandi on Soulful Duets: Bliss.
