Raga Pahadi

Raga Pahadi takes its name from the hills (pahad) of northern India, and its melodies grow out of the folk songs of the hill regions. It is a light, flexible raga, heard at any time of day, and it is a favourite for dhuns, thumris and the closing pieces of a concert. Mishra Pahadi is its ‘mixed’ form, in which musicians freely add other notes for colour.

Pahadi is built mostly on natural notes with a simple, singing shape, which is why it sounds so immediately welcoming.

It is the most recorded raga in the Aimrec catalogue, heard on santoor, bansuri, slide guitar and voice, from Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and Deepak Ram to Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.
