Ragas on the Santoor presents Pandit Bhajan Sopori, the santoor maestro of Kashmir’s Sufiana gharana, with Enayet Hossain on tabla.
The album centres on Raga Marwa, a sunset raga of searching, restless intensity, presented in full: alap, jor and jhala, then gats in jhaptal (10 beats) and teental. It continues with Raga Mishra Kafi and ends with a Kashmiri dhun, a reminder of the santoor’s roots in the music of the Kashmir valley.
Born into a family of musicians, Bhajan Sopori did much to bring the santoor to national and international concert stages, on a par with the sitar and sarod. He was also a distinguished composer. This album shows both sides of the instrument: the full depth of a classical raga and the folk melodies of its home. Released by Aimrec in 2010 (AIMCDIM330).
