Raga Bageshree

Raga Bageshree is a late-night raga of the Kafi thaat, traditionally performed around midnight. Its mood is one of longing and devotion, often described as the feeling of waiting for a beloved.

Bageshree uses flat Ga and flat Ni (komal ga and komal ni), with Pa used sparingly, and its lingering phrases around Ma and Dha give it its yearning quality.

On Aimrec, Bageshree is heard in a complete performance across three talas on Shakir Khan’s The Majestic Sitar, on bansuri by Deepak Ram on Sacred Breath, and on Introduction to Indian Music, Vol. 1.
