Raga Charukeshi

Raga Charukeshi was borrowed into Hindustani music from the South Indian Carnatic tradition. It has a tender, wistful and often melancholy character that suits the voice-like sarangi and the shimmering santoor especially well.

Its scale combines natural Re and Ga with flat Dha and flat Ni (S R G M P d n S), a blend of major and minor colour that makes the raga instantly recognisable.

On Aimrec, Charukeshi is heard on santoor by Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya on The Exotic Santoor, on sarangi by Zohaib Hassan, and in a sitar and sarangi jugalbandi on Soulful Duet, Vol. 3: Legacy.
