Raga Durga is a pentatonic raga: it uses only five notes, S R M P D, leaving out Ga and Ni. It belongs to the Bilawal thaat and is usually performed at night. With only natural notes and an open, simple shape, Durga has a calm, devotional and joyful character.
Its five notes make Durga a clear and approachable raga for new listeners, and a lovely one for melodic instruments such as the sitar and bansuri.
On Aimrec, Durga is heard on sitar by Ustad Shujaat Khan and Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, on bansuri by Deepak Ram, and on Introduction to Indian Music, Vol. 1.
